Cavalera Conspiracy October 12th, 2023 at the Crystal Ballroom (Portland, OR)

After the preamble and intro music (“The Curse”) The Cavalera brothers surfaced and hit the stage. Brothers Max and Igor were joined by Max’s son Igor Amadeus Cavalera on bass and Travis Stone (Pig Destroyer) on lead guitar. The duo are promoting two albums released by Sepultura, the re-recorded ‘Bestial Devastation’ released in 1985 and ‘Morbid Visions’ real release in 1986 respectively, issued this fall via Nuclear Blast.

In almost chronological order the band launched into “Bestial Devastation” through “Sexta Feira 13” from ‘Bestial Devastation. They kicked off ‘Morbid Visions’ with the title track and almost keep to the sequence of the album for the most part with “Troops of Doom” getting bumped to later into the set along with Sepultura classics like “Dead Embryonic Cells ,” “Refuse/Resist,” “Territory,” as well as a cover of Motörhead’s “Iron Fist,” which rounded out the encore. Cavalera Conspiracy delivered an intense, explosive, energetic performance as we all anticipated.

When bands or in this case founding musicians recut something from the back catalog, it’s ill advised and the results could be disastrous. Just look at what Roger Waters did with ‘The Dark Side of the Moon-redux.’ Once Max and Igor recut the classics and it was well received, then it was time to take it to the live setting. They dug into their bag of tricks and delivered a fantastic recreation of the early classics we know and love. While I wouldn’t want them recut anymore classics, this was very well done, in studio and as a tour representing ‘Bestial Devastation’ and ‘Morbid Visions.’ If you missed it, you missed out.
